August 10th is a day set aside to remember all the men and women who have died inside Canadian prisons. We want to raise awareness about the impact that the policing and incarceration has on sex workers. In many cities, being arrested on a prostitution offence is the most common route for women (including and especially trans women) to be first pulled into the revolving door of the criminal legal system and all of its violence and oppression. This year Maggie's Community Engagement coordinator Monica Forrester spoke about sex workers--in particular trans women sex workers--who are oppressed by policing and prisons. Later Drop-In Coordinator Phoenix Katt spoke about anti-trafficking legislation and it's impact on sex workers and their right to migrate. Check out Phoenix's speech here!
